Michel Thomas Method Speak Mandarin Chinese Advanced Review
Alright, let me be the first to say:
i. I think the method of learning is a great one.(eg the colors association etc)
ii. I have not completed the course
That being said, I don’t know how anyone can stand listening to this. I HATE the fact that it has people who cannot speak Mandarin, BUT moreover who cannot pronounce Mandarin. The ’students’ that are learning Mandarin, are plain awful at pronunciation. This is a serious problem for me;
1. I need to hear natural and native speakers pronunciation so that I can mimic it. Don’t get me wrong, I never said I can pronounce any better than the students, but listening to them speak completely throws me off. And at times I’ll remember what they said instead of the native speaker.
2. I choose the self-study method to get away from the people that made me sound horrible. So why am I reintroduced to them? The method may be alright for beginners — as in your Chinese comprises of names of Chinese food, places and people — but for an advanced learner, I think not.
Anyways, this is my rant and I really wanted to get that out there. I think this would be a much better course if they hired people that had natural, native pronunciation. If it is possible, try a sample audio file first.
Lastly I am harsh on this review because correct pronunciation is critical. Getting it right the first time is a lot easier that having to correct yourself once you have learned it the wrong way. Just think of a foreigner entering your country and speaking your language with their accent, its tough to change, so you might as well do it right from the start.
